FINDING BALANCE THIS FESTIVE SEASON

FINDING BALANCE THIS FESTIVE SEASON cover

By Chris Pearce, BlueFit Fitness Manager

The festive season often brings joy, celebration and a little extra eating and less moving. It’s completely normal to feel like your routine slips during this time, but the most important thing you can do is avoid guilt and let go of the “make up for it” mindset.

Forget the “burn it off” mentality
Many of us have been conditioned to believe we must “work off” a big meal or sweat out a festive drink. Not only is this untrue, but it encourages an unhealthy relationship with both food and exercise. Movement should make you feel good, not act as punishment for enjoying yourself.

Move in ways that support your lifestyle
If regular training is part of your routine, keeping some consistency can help you feel balanced. Choose workouts that make you feel energised, not exhausted.

If you don’t train daily or you want some time off, that’s perfectly fine. Food isn’t something you have to earn, and missing a session won’t undo your progress.

Prioritise rest just as much as exercise
Sleep is one of the most underrated aspects of wellbeing, especially when schedules become busier. Rest helps you maintain energy, mood, and motivation, key ingredients in keeping any routine sustainable.

Enjoy the food, guilt free
Holiday meals are only a handful of meals in your year. A few indulgent dishes won’t change much in the long run. Try not to label foods as “good” or “bad”, all food provides fuel and enjoyment.

After a big meal, avoid high intensity training. Blood flow is needed for digestion, so instead opt for a gentle walk or light movement.

Remember: Weight fluctuates
If you’re someone who monitors your weight, expect natural day to day changes, especially when enjoying foods higher in carbs or sodium. These shifts mostly reflect water retention and undigested food, not fat gain.

Shift your focus to what truly matters
During this season, redirect your attention to meaningful metrics:

  • Sleep quality
  • Mood
  • Energy levels
  • Daily movement

Being on leave often means more opportunities to nurture these habits.

Embrace the real spirit of the season
The festive season isn’t defined by strict routines or what’s on our plates. It’s a time to connect with family, unwind, and enjoy a well deserved break. Don’t stress about a missed workout, or a couple of extra desserts. Fit sessions in where you can, and allow yourself some flexibility.

Finding balance is about supporting your wellbeing, not striving for perfection.
